The Litas was introduced in 1922, replacing the ostmark & ostruble introduced by German occupying forces during WWI. In March 1939, Hitler demanded the Kalpeida region, also known as the Memel region, and Lithuania complied. The Reichsmark replaced the Litas in that region. 1 Litas = 40 pfennig. In 1941, Lithuania was annexed by U.S.S.R with the Litas = 0.9 rubles, although Litas was worth about 3-5 rubles. Trying to protect their currency, the people bought up the currency. Withdrawals were then limited to 250 Litu. In 1941 it was abolished, and the Soviet ruble became Lithuania's currency from 1941. The Litas was restored in 1993-2015. Lithuania used their Litas currency until they adopted the Euro in 2015, joining the E.U in 2004. There is a wealth of fascinating history of Lithuania's post WWII financial events on the internet.
